Holly – Work Experience

I have been interning with UCLan publishing for the past two weeks and it has been a wonderful experience, as I have been completely immersed into the world of publishing. Everyone at UCLan has ensured I have had a well-rounded experience, getting a taste for everything the industry has to offer. From marketing tasks to reading manuscripts, and from working on social media to learning about the editing process; I have been able to see the bigger picture of the process of publishing a book. The opportunity to get involved with each part has helped me gain a clearer understanding of my career prospects and feedback from the team has allowed me to identify my strengths and areas for improvement, which will be beneficial when I begin to apply for publishing jobs post-university.

My favourite part of the internship was reading manuscript submissions from aspiring authors and writing reports with my opinions on them. I could use my experience as an English Literature student to identify the potential of books and my opinion was valued within the team. This task also allowed me to learn about the business of publishing and equipped me with tools to identify what it takes for a book to sell in the industry.

I have learnt so much in the past weeks and I cannot thank all the staff at UCLan publishing enough for providing me with this insightful experience.
